Newborn Photography is very popular right now. With all of the images on Facebook, instagram, and Pinterest it’s hard not to see these adorable baby photographs everywhere! And now there are more photographers than ever to choose from to photograph your brand new baby in their first few weeks! There are many photographers with different skill levels, different personalities, different shooting and editing styles, etc. And you know what, I love that about this business! Photography is a form of artistic expression and no two photographers should be expected to put out similar work, but I think that there are three things to look for that will really make it easy for you to find your perfect photographer match. After all, you will be spending a considerable amount of time with them throughout the session!
- Style. You want to make sure that you are going to receive the types of images that you have envisioned. You’ll want to look closely at the photographers past work and see if their style matches yours, that the images that you receive will be ones that are cohesive to the style that you have in your home so that you will be able to display your new artwork seamlessly along side the things you already have. Talk to them and see if they prefer bright colors and trendy sets, or rather muted tones and timeless props. There is not a right or wrong answer here, just preference. (And sometimes we love both!)
- Experience. This is probably the most important one. The photographer must be able to not only take beautiful images (which is difficult enough on it’s own) but also comfort, appease, and pose your baby with the utmost care and caution. Safety first is something that you will want to make sure that your photographer does not take lightly. No pose is worth putting your baby in a precarious situation, and that’s why an experienced photographer is invaluable.
- Consistency. Consistency is key in knowing that you can trust you will get a complete gallery of images that are of the same quality you have seen on the photographers social media accounts. One “sneak peek” from a session does not tell you the story of how they work through an entire session. You can always look at their website or blog to get a better idea of their complete work, or ask them to see a few different examples of full sessions.
Newborn Photography is an investment and should bring you years of joy. There will never be another time such as this, in your life or theirs.
